What in English has the meaning of splinter, shard, is in electrical engineering the "heart" of every integrated circuit. Chips are mass-produced on silicon wafers, separated by sawing and then processed into components. Silicon chips come in a wide variety of designs and functions. The best-known chips are logic components (processor, graphics, memory chips), signal processors and digital-to-analogue converters. The high integration density allows functions such as GPS, WLAN and Bluetooth® to be realised on a single chip. One chip can contain several billion circuit components such as resistors and transistors and can be between 0.2 mm2 and 2000 mm2 in size.
