The pitch refers to the distance between the pins of electronic components, measured from the center point to the center point of the pins. The pitch is historically based on inches, which is why many common dimensions (e.g. 5.08mm, 2.54mm, 1.27mm, 0.65mm...) are divisors or multiples of an inch.
